Life Skills

Adolescence is a vital stage of exploration, growth and development. It is the transition stage from childhood to adulthood. An individual in this stage undergoes physiological and psychosocial maturation. It is also a stage where young people extend their relationships beyond parents and family and are intensely influenced by peers and the outside world in general. These are the years of creativity, possibility and spirit of adventure. However, it is also a stage of experimentation, risk taking and making uninformed decisions which is greatly influenced by peer pressure. Adolescence thereby is a turning point in one’s life—a period of increased potential yet a period of greater vulnerability.

And so, with life situation becoming more complex and challenging, there is a great need for young boys and girls to learn how to face and cope with challenges and changes in life. Life Skills enable them to take on the challenges of life with confidence and courage. Acquisition of Life Skills by students enables them to deal effectively with life's adversities and stressful moments in life.

World Health Organisation (WHO) has identified ten core Life Skills and they are as follows:

Self Awareness: It includes recognition of 'self', our character, strengths and weaknesses, desires and dislikes, of being aware of oneself and people around.

Empathy: It is the ability to imagine what life is like for another person. It can help us to accept others, who may be very different from ourselves.

Critical Thinking: It is an ability to analyze information and experiences in an objective manner. Critical Thinking can contribute to a well balanced way of life by helping us to recognize and assess the factors that influence attitudes and behavior.

Creative Thinking: It is a novel way of seeing or doing things that is characteristic of four components-fluency, flexibility, originality and elaboration.

Decision Making: It helps us to deal constructively with decisions; it includes how to actively make decisions about their actions in relation to a healthy assessment of different options.

Problem Solving: It helps us to deal constructively with problems in our lives. Significant problems that are left unresolved can cause mental stress and give rise to accompanying physical strain. Therefore, equipping oneself with this skill will help us deal with problems effectively.

Interpersonal skills: It helps us to relate in positive ways with people we interact and also to maintain and sustain healthy relationship around.

Effective Communication: It refers to being able to express oneself, both verbally and non-verbally. This means the ability to express opinions and desires, and also needs and fears.

Coping with Stress: It means recognizing the sources of stress in our lives, recognizing how they affect us, and how we act in a way that can helps us control our levels of stress.

Managing Emotions: It refers to recognizing emotions within us and others, being aware of how emotions influence behavior and being able to respond to emotions appropriately.

All these skills are interrelated and reinforce each other. Together, they are responsible for our psychosocial competence; build our self-esteem and self-efficacy and nurture holistic development.

According to UNICEF, Life Skills is "…a behaviour change or behaviour development approach to address a balance of three areas: knowledge, attitude and skills". .Therefore, Life Skills enable individuals to translate knowledge, attitude and values into well-informed and healthy behavior, i.e. what to do and how to do it.
